What they say
'Could I use your article on Ama at your website www.ashtangayogashala.com.au to post on Facebook. Of course I will give you the credit for the article. I think its a great article and wanted to share it with others'. - Scott
'Hi Richard, Even though I'm going away. I don't mind being kept on the emailing list if that is alright? I was very skeptical about finding a good teacher but everything worked out even better than I could have imagined and on a personal level the transformation has been enormous. Even though my ego was a bit bruised when I first started attending your classes, going back to the very basics with the asanas has really been helpful and helped me to understand the construction of the postures (how they are supposed to feel and why something is done a certain way). There is still a long way to go (a few lifetimes worth of work) but now I really feel like I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be when it comes to yoga practice.
I will also miss the chanting and listening you talk about yoga philosophy. It took me a while to get into it but towards the end that became my favorite part of the practice. Hopefully you will keep teaching mantras and sutras at the shala because there are people who enjoy it a lot.... ' Paula
'Thanks for the email – a good opportunity for me to touch base again. Always miss the classes, your talks and all of the great learning that goes with it'. - Margaret
'Just a quick note of thanks for your extraordinary commitment and consistency with the running Ashtanga classes. I am very much enjoying my class and personal practice'. - Jamie
'Here we are living in XXXXXXX. It was difficult at first, but now we are settling in and enjoying life more. I remember your discussions from when I was able to stay back, about how Ashtanga Yoga has been misinterpreted and reduced to a gymnastics-like form of exercise. Perhaps I didn’t believe it to the extent you described it or I didn’t appreciate it until I experienced it first hand. Westerners can’t help but turn things into a competition. Thank you for the book references and I look forward to reading the interview with Manju.
What strikes me the most is that now I see your teaching method as very disciplined but with an enormous amount of freedom. I feel very lucky to have been taught by you'. - Daniela
"I’m leaving Brisbane tonight, so just wanted to say thanks for all the teachings, practices and knowledge that you’ve shared with me during these two and a half years. I think having practiced Ashtanga Yoga for all this time has had a tremendously positive in my life overall. Improved health, strength of body and mind, better concentration and a more peaceful self in general, even improved reflexes!" Pablo (Chile)
"I would like to thank you for the 10 months that I have been coming to classes. I can't believe how lucky I was to end up in Ashtanga Yoga Shala because there is a lot of not-so-good schools out there. I was very skeptical about finding a good teacher, but everything worked out even better than I could have imagined and on a personal level the transformation has been enormous. Even though my ego was a bit bruised when I first started attending classes, going back to the very basics with the asanas has really been helpful and helped me to understand the construction of the postures (how they are supposed to feel and why something is done a certain way). "Hello Richard. I was really enjoying your classes. I thought they were extremely well instructed. I just wanted to let you know why I stopped attending. I have changed lifestyle and now live in New Zealand. That’s all. I just wanted to let you know I loved your class and if I am ever back in Brissie I will attend again. I thought your approach to yoga classes was very informative and technique focused. I really appreciated the demonstrations and details you provided during your classes."
"We both really enjoyed the classes and are disappointed we couldn’t do more. I am especially grateful as previously (my wife) has been extremely reluctant to do any sort of Yoga due to her current level of flexibility. However, Richard does such a good job of making Ashtanga accessible to all, she is now inspired and practicing with me almost every day."
"I wanted to tell you in person how much your steady support, inspiration, and guidance has meant to me. Thank you for being my teacher. Your consistent and thorough approach has inspired and encouraged me to practice and discover the treasures of yoga. Not to mention to heal (in many different ways) from the most terrible injury of my life.
Yoga practice is very important to me and my biggest concern with moving away from Brisbane has been how I will continue to practice and learn (I know I won't find another Richard).
I've been so fortunate to have lots of time and flexibility in my schedule, now we will see how strong my resolve is to keep practice consistent now that I have such a demanding schedule looming. My feeling is that your dedication and steady commitment are planting seeds for a prodigious future. You are one of the few people I've met in Australia that have really inspired me through the example of their daily life's work. I will continue toendeavour to follow your lead.
With heartfelt gratitude,"
"It has been a pleasure so far to learn from you and Maxine and the other students - I feel like I'm slowly waking up. Thanks for your enthusiasm and the energy you put into classes, it is inspiring.
See you soon,"
"Hi Richard. Can I just thank you for thoroughly teaching me the foundations of Ashtanga Yoga. With all due respect, you would have a 'cow' if you saw the yoga class I participated in last night up here in (North Queensland).
Hope all is well,"
Hi Richard. om shanti shanti shanti!! .... I am so grateful."
"You once spoke of bringing a certain emotion or essence (bhava?) to one's practice. At the time my only and quite overwhelming thought was gratitude. That my body feels so much stronger and my mind feels so much calmer is mainly due to my slowly developing yoga practice."
"I had been practicing Yoga for some time before arriving to Australia and starting classes at Ashtanga Yoga Shala (AYS) in Brisbane. Since my first class, I was impressed by the knowledge and experience of Richard Clark as a teacher. His dedication and invitation to embrace Yoga not as a physical exercise, but as a philosophy and a means to enhance self-awareness in daily life were both evident and inspiring.
Teachers at Ashtanga Yoga Shala are fully qualified and closely monitor the progress of each student in his or her practice. As a student this is an invaluable opportunity to learn and make progress in a safe manner and to gradually deepen into the experience of Yoga practice.
Classes are also held in a totally respectful environment in which a sense of community naturally arises. This is made possible by the personable attitude of Richard, Maxine and Iain and their commitment towards the school and its students.
It was through AYS and particularly Richard that I discovered Ayurveda, the sister science of Yoga, and to whom I will always be grateful for introducing me to such precious knowledge. Ayurvedic principles are regularly mentioned in class which provide key suggestions in terms of diet, seasonal considerations and basic routines that support students’ Yoga practice- an aspect that is rarely considered in other Yoga schools and is fundamental.
I would recommend AYS to anyone who either intends introducing himself or herself into Yoga for the first time, or that have already had some experience. As a beginner, Step 1 classes provide the ground to build a solid Yoga practice. Basic but essential Yoga principles, such as the importance of the connection of movement and breath together with alignment are continuously emphasized. As a regular practitioner, ongoing and personalized guidance and support to progress in the different aspects of Yoga is given.
I can clearly state that my Yoga practice will never be the same after attending classes AYS for around 3 years. It is a privilege to have been taught by such experienced and knowledgeable teachers who are able to truly transmit the essence of this ancient practice.
With sincere gratitude to AYS always,"
"Thank you for teaching me Ashtanga the for past few months. I really enjoy the energy you create in class and your focus on perfection. The direction you have given me in my Yoga practise has been invaluable. I really enjoyed listening to your discussions at the end of class and participating in the chants."
"I feel lucky to have walked into your Shala and be given such precious teachings. Your direction has shown me a path that I sense I will travel for quite some time, and it's really been a privilege for me to have your guidance.
"It means a lot to have yoga and your classes as a constant running through my life. Your commitment, dedication and enthusiasm continue to inspire me, year after year".
" I would just like to thank you for all of your help and guidance over the past few months. I really enjoy coming to yoga at the Ashtanga Yoga Shala and learning about the practice and history of Ashtanga. Your knowledge of all things yoga and the culture associated with it continues to astound me. I only wish I could remember half the things you've said after class ....... Your personal attention to each student in the class is one of the things that I find most important and something that has helped me grow in my yoga practice, physically and spiritually.
With much gratitude,"
"Thank you for guiding me on my journey with yoga. For your careful attention to my practice and for the clarity, knowledge and detail of your teaching. This is a gift I cherish.
"We were here for the Yoga Hike weekend which was facilitated by well known Yoga Teacher Richard Clark. His depth of knowledge was both eye opening and inspiring."
- Claire Morris in Marie Claire Magazine. 2006
"I don't know if you remember me but I hear about you, Iain and the Yoga Shala from my friend .... My thoughts often turn to the good times that I spent in Brisbane. I don't know if or when I will see you again but I just wanted to reach out across the miles and say thanks from one who has grown from knowing you.
Love and Peace,"
"I miss classes with you and Maxine: your attention to detail your chanting and stories and your healing energy.
" I feel so grateful for the difference Ashtanga Yoga has brought to areas of my life. It's like being given a gift! I thank you for that gift that you pass on to others through Yoga. It has given me clarity, a sense of peace and this amazingtype of happiness that comes from within and it is an incredible feeling because it is not created by any outside factors like money etc. You're an incredible inspiration to those around you."
"a huge big thank you to Richard for all his inspiration, patience, motivation, expertise and just the best energy!! We are so lucky to have you.
"Many thanks for your dedication to teaching and your generosity with your time and knowledge.
"I would like you to know that I am in full gratitude and feel blessed to have found your school. It's wonderful to feel that I am in the presence of people whom have walked through the fire. rare indeed and I look forward to the further unfoldment of being through yogashala.
"Dear Richard, I feel so lucky to have found your School because you strive for excellence, which is a rare enough thing. And because you foster an environment where there is not just an absence of negativity, but a real, unspoken sense of respect shared by everyone in the classes."
"I can't make it to any yoga classes this week. I would never have imagined that yoga would have become soooo important in my life. I feel totally deprived from not being able to be a part of that magical time in the Yoga Hall. I miss it and your wonderful teaching."
" Thank you so much for encouraging me to take the first step."
"The time I have spent at the Shala has been life changing and I am grateful in having a beautiful place to practice yoga."
