Step 1 Class is formatted to meet the needs of both complete beginners,  those with past yoga experience but new to Ashtanga Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga Students from other schools who have relocated to Brisbane and students returning after a long break from practice.

'I had been practicing Yoga for some time before arriving to Australia and starting classes at Ashtanga Yoga Shala (AYS) in Brisbane. Since my first class, I was impressed by the knowledge and experience of Richard Clark as a teacher.  His dedication and invitation to embrace Yoga not as a physical exercise, but as a philosophy and a means to enhance self-awareness in daily life were both evident and inspiring.

Teachers at Ashtanga Yoga Shala are fully qualified and closely monitor the progress of each student in his or her practice. As a student this is an invaluable opportunity to learn and make progress in a safe manner and to gradually deepen into the experience of Yoga practice.

Classes are also held in a totally respectful environment in which a sense of community naturally arises. This is made possible by the personable attitude of Richard, Maxine and Iain and their commitment towards the school and its students.

It was through AYS and particularly Richard that I discovered Ayurveda, the sister science of Yoga, and to whom I will always be grateful for introducing me to such precious knowledge. Ayurvedic principles are regularly mentioned in class which provide key suggestions in terms of diet, seasonal considerations and basic routines that support students’ Yoga practice- an aspect that is rarely considered in other Yoga schools and is fundamental.

I would recommend AYS to anyone who either intends introducing himself or herself into Yoga for the first time, or that have already had some experience. As a beginner,  Step 1 classes provide the ground to build a solid Yoga practice. Basic but essential Yoga principles, such as the importance of the connection of movement and breath together with alignment are continuously emphasized. As a regular practitioner, ongoing and personalized guidance and support to progress in the different aspects of Yoga is given.
