Step 1 Class
Begins the journey of the Ashtanga Yoga practice.
This is a guided class designed to introduce newcomers to ashtanga yoga. The purpose of our step 1 class is to establish important fundamentals of ashtanga yoga. Even if you have experience in other styles of yoga, it’s important to begin here, in order to learn the initial sequencing of postures, the vinyasa method, ujjayi breathing and bandhas.
Whilst we do encourage a reasonable level of fitness, you need not be strong or flexible to begin - we'll show you how. You are required to be able to move with ease from a standing to a sitting position.
Step 1 students are required to have an 8 class pass.
"The correct preparation for any journey is all important"
Step 2 Class
This is a more energetic class than step 1, suitable only for those with no history of injuries and who are familiar with the principles of ashtanga yoga as taught in our step 1 class. Participants must be in good health, be fit and able to move with ease from standing to sitting positions. It is required that all students attend our step 1 class at least once before commencing step 2 class. Attendance at step 2 class is not required before attending the mysore classes. However once commenced, the step 2 class format must be committed to memory before attending mysore classes. This class is not suitable for pregnant women.
Step 2 students are required to have an 8 class pass.
Mysore Style Class
Continuing the journey - the traditional class format for developing a real yoga practice.
Pre-requisite: your ability to memorise and work through either the ashtanga yoga shala step 1 or step 2 sequence. There are thus two entry options into the mysore style classes:
- attend step1 class (understand principles and memorise this sequence) then commence mysore style classes or
- attend step 1 class (understand principles), begin step 2 class (understand principles and memorise sequence), attend mysore classes.
Mysore Style is a self-paced class which continues on from Step 1. Here students with varying ranges of experience practise together, demonstrating regular and committed yoga practise and their ability to integrate new instructions under the guidance and encouragement of the teacher.
This is the traditional class format and the most effective method for developing a yoga practice.
There are various class passes available to our mysore style students depending on frequency of attendance.
